About Us
Purpose:
Children with Autistic spectrum disorder and developmental disabilities have major problems with social skills and communication. They have difficulties expressing their feelings and thoughts verbally in a proper manner. Isolation and repetitive ritualistic behavior are part of their routines and a way of controlling their anxiety and agitation. Therefore, therapeutic approaches consist of helping these children enhance their social communication skills and become more autonomous and independent. These can be achieved through therapeutic methods such as play therapy, behavior therapy, sports and game activities, and speech therapy while their families are involved with therapy and parental training as well. Boat Kids purpose is to initiate and provide the opportunity for these children and their families/guardians to interact with one another in a sports outing event i.e., boating, playing games, and any other activity which helps to reduce their anxiety and tension and help them to learn different ways of expressing feelings and relating to each other in a safe and natural outdoor environment under close supervision.
How it Started!
Priscilla Buis and Diane Davis have always felt a personal desire to help children with special needs and their families. They got together and created Boat Kids to provide a unique opportunity that many families don’t have the freedom to participate in. The real reward has been to watch the excitement of those involved.
